Jan Larsson trained to be a violinmaker at Hantverkets folkhögskola (the folk high school of Craftsmanship) in Leksand in 1982-86. Head teacher was Carlo Bergman who himself was educated in 1959-63 in Cremona by Ornati, Gaetano and Pietro Sgarabotto.

As a newly graduated journeyman Jan worked with Ursus Scheifele in Basel, Switzerland. Returned from there in 1987 he started Violinateljé Gefle together with a colleague. The Master Letter Jan received in 1990 and since -93 he runs his own workshop in Lima, located three miles south of Sälen in Dalarna.

Jan has been represented frequently in The Triennial in Cremona: In the years 1988 and 1991 he participated with a violin in/on each occasion. Three years later his violin came in 9th place as one of the ten finalists.

In 1997 Jan managed to get two violins into the exhibition. When Jan took part in the competition in 2000 he was accepted as the only Swede. Out of all violins submitted merely 34 were selected to the exhibition that year. After 15 years another violin was sent to XIV Concorso Internazionale di Liuteria. Below you are able to see the violin exhibited in the catalogue from the exhibition in 2015.

During his years in Lima Jan has taken in a great number of apprentices and students from the school of violinmaking in Leksand, where he also has been teaching from time to time. In addition he is hired as a lecturer in various events.
